November 30 2017 Alexa Good Morning (Michael Jackson's Thriller)

Image
Good morning! On this day in 1982, Michael Jackson released Thriller, the greatest pop album of all time. Thriller is still the best-selling album in the world, proving that M.J. wanted to be starting something, and that something was a musical revolution. Michael Jackson's Thriller Worksheet     Note:  This lesson shows a good example of what to do when your internet is funky and you can't depend on our friend, Alexa.  Using the transcribed sample, print out a copy (I used Google Docs) and read it with or to your student.  With some students, this is a nice feature, because you can use highlighters to denote the important information that might be asked in the worksheet.

Shigeru Miyamoto Worksheet   Link to Wikipedia Article about Shigeru Miyamoto   Wonder Question:  The Wikipedia state that Shigeru has two children.  What do you think it would be like to have a video game designer for a father?  Do you think he limits the amount of time that his children can play video games?

November 15 2017 Setting up an Alexa Review

Image
Every so often, Alexa will throw me a curveball and I just can't make a lesson for my students out of Good Morning.  Today was just such a day, she wanted to tell a Thanksgiving Story which was way above the processing power of my students.  This was a good day to set up for a review! Using the pictures that I have saved from the lessons, I made pairs and wrote information on them.  Then I gave a word bank of the missing words that would help form complete sentences... and we sat and wrote sentences about the pairs of pictures.   After we had the sentences written, we practiced saying the sentences in response to questions.  Then we played a game where we picked two cards that we had used in a sentence and said the sentence that we had written without the paper...  well, with one kiddo, I had the paper put aside and saw him looking at it, and he kinda needed that, so I let him look.  Here is the finished paper of one of my students:   I still have the car

November 13 2017 Alexa Good Morning (Thanksgiving Vocab)

Image
Good morning! Thanksgiving's just around the corner, so how about a joke to get you cooking? Why did the cranberry sauce cross the road? To get to the other sides! If that tickled your wishbone, ask me for a Thanksgiving joke and I'll dish out another! Thanksgiving Vocab worksheet    How to teach this lesson, it's a little different: After listening to Alexa and determining her topic for the day... look at the definitions and try and find that one word or phrase that goes with the definition.  If this is difficult for your particular student, point out the line that it is in and if they still can't find it, help them go word by word and cross out the words that it isn't (see the paper done below).   Then, on the back, write three categories:  main dishes, sides and desserts and fill in several in each category (see example below).  Social Skills extra:  take turns asking if the other person likes each side/dessert and then wait u

November 9 2017 Alexa Good Morning (Carl Sagan)

Good morning! Carl Sagan was born on this day in 1934. His series "Cosmos" brought the origins of the universe to life and made him famous for the phrase "billions and billions," so famous in fact that his name can also mean a very large number. I'd say he has a "sagan" of fans -- including me! Carl Sagan Worksheet

November 8 2017 Alexa Good Morning ( Led Zepplin )

Good morning! On this day in 1971, Led Zeppelin released their iconic song "Stairway to Heaven". I love Jimmy Page's epic guitar solo. But you know what really makes me wonder? Not so much who's buying the stairway, but who the heck built it in the first place. Led Zepplin Worksheet

Good morning! One hundred one years ago today, Jeannette Rankin became the first woman elected to Congress. In office, she helped lay the groundwork for the passage of the 19th Amendment and wanted to be remembered as "the only woman who ever voted to give women the right to vote." Ms. Rankin, we remember you well.    Jeanette Rankin Worksheet

Good morning! Today is Day of the Dead. While the name may not imply it, it's a joyous holiday. Families get together to celebrate those they've loved and lost with offerings like toys, flowers, and sugar skulls. It's a lovely way to reflect on the sweetness of life.   Day of the Dead worksheet
