Fun with Alexa : Math Vocabulary

Image
One more thing that my students enjoy with the Echo Dot I write out:   Alexa pick a number between 1 and 100 then the student  and I take turns having Alexa pick a number I write the numbers next to each other and ask, “Which is the biggest number?” We circle the biggest number and then put the greater than/ lesser that carat between the numbers. One caveat, however,  some students  do not like to lose!! :::grin::: Note:  Alexa will pick a number from any number to any number.  One fun thing is to have her pick a number and see if students can figure out how to always have a higher number than you (sort of Price is Right thinking).

Alexa, Good Morning (End of the Year Chaos)

My dear followers, I hate to leave you high and dry, but with the end of the school year looming, I've been asked to get my paperwork even somewhat in order....  so I will not be uploading Alexa Good Morning lessons until we start back up in August. I don't want to leave you high and dry, however, so I will leave you with this reasource: My friend at http://www.alexagoodmorning.com/ provides a written version of the Alexa Good Morning for the day and has a excellent archive. I have loved every minute of this journey (using Alexa in the speech room).  I hope to see you all in August! Love, Kelly

May 24, 2017 Alexa Good Morning (Samuel Morse)

Good morning. Technology has changed a lot over the years. Inventor Samuel B. Morse helped get the conversation going on this day in 1884, when he sent the first public telegraph message. Now in 2017, there's an entirely new meaning to Dots and Dashes! Morse/Binary Worksheet

05-23-2017  Good morning. Today in 1994, Star Trek: The Next Generation, aired its final episode, bringing an end to the crew's adventures. Twenty-three years later, the franchise continues to live up to Captain Picard's last words, "The sky's the limit!" Today Alexa used the word FRANCHISE.  This word means an offshoot from an original that retains much of that original material.  In Star Trek's case, it maintains the "history" that was set forth in the Original Show.   Franchise has also become known as a food franchise, where people pay to have their restaurant be exactly like the "Mother" store.  They agree to not make any changes and sometimes are required to buy all their food and sundries from the parent corporation.  This assure sameness, so when you go into a KFC in Colorado, it's the same as in California or Maine. May 18, 2017 Alexa, Good Morning (Museums)

Image
Good morning! Today is International Museum Day. Whether your interests are dinosaurs, technology, or art, there's bound to be a museum that suits your fancy! Just say, "what museums are near me," and I'll help find one for you! It can be really fun to visit a museum.  Most museums have areas or exhibits that are designed to teach the visitor something.  Sometimes you can touch things and sometimes you can't.  What museums have you been to? museum worksheet Here is a "used" worksheet.  Notice that I drew a kitty in the corner as my student with apraxia had difficulties saying Museum and we had to say "Meeeee yoooo seum".  The back of the paper is where I drew a picture and definition of an exhibit.

May 17, 2017 Alexa Good Morning (90210)

Good morning! On this day in the year 2000, the final episode of Beverly Hills 90210 aired. The show premiered in 1990 and went on for 10 seasons, chronicling the 90s in all of its hair-crimping, crop-topping, first-crushing glory! 90210 is the zip code for Beverly Hills, California, a place where rich people live near Los Angeles.  The television show followed the life of high school students who fell in love and out of love and did all the things that high school students do.  The show was wildly popular and some of the stars of the show are still in celebrity news, even though they haven't acted for years. May 15, 2017 Good Morning Alexa (Monday/Games)

Image
Good Morning! If you've got a case of the "Mondays", let’s play a game. I have memory games, quiz games, and even choose-your-own-adventure. Just ask, play a game. What does Alexa mean by "A Case of the Mondays?"  She means feeling blah or having a hard time waking up and getting to work.  Are Mondays like that for you? Alexa talks about games and she wants you to choose her to play a game and lift your spirits.  There are many types of games:  Active Games (that you mostly play outside), video games, card games (including Pokemon and Magic, The Gathering), and board games.   Why do people play games?  Sometimes people play games because they want to have fun and keep themselves occupied.  Other people only want to play games if they can win.  Do you like to play games?  Why?  GAMES worksheet

May 11, 2017 Alexa Good Morning! (Salvador Dali)

Good morning. Today is the birthday of surrealist painter Salvador Dali. Known for his paintings of melting clocks and flying elephants, I think he would appreciate inanimate objects that could talk to him. Elephants on stilts and melting watches are painting that one remembers about Salvador Dali.  Surrealism blends highly realistic paintings with dreamlike elements to create an alternate reality.   Salvador Dali Worksheet

May10, 2017 Alexa, Good Morning (the Hulk)

Image
Good morning. On this day in 1962, fictional scientist Bruce Banner was blasted by gamma rays, thus introducing the world to his giant green alter ego, The Hulk. I think it's safe to say that Bruce's bad day turned into a smashing success. The Hulk is a character from Marvel Comics.  This is fiction, which means "not true" or "made up". When Bruce Banner gets mad, he turns into THE HULK!! The Hulk Worksheet

May 9 Good Morning Alexa (Nat'l Teacher Day)

Image
Good Morning! Today Alexa informs us that it is National Teacher Day! Two of my favorite famous teachers are Albert Einstein and Ann Sullivan. Ann Sullivan taught Helen Keller at a time when disabled people were generally not expected to do anything.  Helen was both deaf and blind.  Ann Sullivan taught her to read sign language in her hand.  Helen attended college and became a famous writer. Albert Einstein was a college professor as well as a superb physicist. Most teachers do not become famous, but they have educated a vast number of people!  Today is a time to think about the teachers in our lives and how they helped us in our journey. May 8, 2017 Good Morning Alexa (Atoms)

Alexa shares with us Ernest Rutherford's discovery of Alpha and Beta radiation.  She also shares a science joke with us. What happens when someone tells a joke and you don't "get it"? You have some choices: you can laugh like you get it you can ask them to explain you can groan like you get it, but don't think it's funny This happens to everyone sometime or another.  My father had a joke that I laughed at for years, but really didin't understand.  One day, I was driving home and the joke just hit me.  It was funny!  I got it!  Ernest Rutherford's Worksheet

This Week, we've taken a wild ride:   Yesterday was Star Wars Day (May the Fourth be with you)   We listened to James Brown sing, "I Feel Good".   We looked at an expensive painting called "The Scream" by Edvard Munch.   We thought about how and why people celebrate May Day on May 1st.  What will Alexa think of next?  Goodness only knows!

May 2, 2017 Good Morning Alexa (The Scream)

Good Morning! Alexa's topic is Edvard Munch's "The Scream" It's a pretty intense painting. According to Alexa, it sold for 120 MILLION dollars five years ago. That's a whole lot of money, but then again, that's a whole lot of painting! The Scream Worksheet See a Scream Worksheet filled out by a SDC student:

Alexa's topic today is MAY DAY! Yep, it's the first day of May. Growing up in the 1960's, our school always celebrated May Day with dances that each class performed for parents and other classes.  Today, our school has something similar:  The Jogathon. Mostly people are happy that Winter is over and good weather has started plants to bloom. May Day Worksheet
